English Language Arts
In the Fall of 2014, the students in Kindergarten through grade 5 will receive lessons in English Language Arts using the McGraw Hill WONDERS. The adoption of this statewide reading program aligned to Common Core, will enable all learners to access the reading materials and support activities digitally from home computers.
Our grade 6 students will receive their ELA instruction from the CollegeBoard program entitled SpringBoard. This program, like WONDERS, is designed to inspire, connect and prepare all students to be College and Career Ready. Al lesson presentations are engaging and rigorous.
Embedded within lessons, are opportunities for students to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to compete in the 21st century. Throughout the units of study, students are given ample opportunities to refine and master strategies that will enhance their ability to understand and analyze any challenging text, write with clarity and voice, to speak and listen in order to communicate and work effectively with others, and to view media with critical intelligence.
Mathematics
ORIGO Stepping Stones is the Hawaii State-recommended mathematics curriculum that is used for grades K-5 at Maunaloa Elementary School. The mathematics program in grade 6 is the Hawaii State-recommended curriculum, Go Math. Both programs are aligned to the Common Core Standards and designed to engage students in making sense of the eight mathematical practices. Classroom teachers focus on computational fluency and provide students with opportunities to work in important areas of mathematics, (i.e., Operations & Algebraic Thinking, Number & Operation in Base Ten & Fractions, Measurement & Data, and Geometry) to engage learners to make connections and communicate their mathematical thinking.
ScienceScience provides many opportunities for students to develop and maintain the essential skills that form the basis for scientific inquiry. Inquiry skills are important tools and are essential for investigating the natural world, and numerous opportunities are embedded throughout our science program.
Reading underlies everything students do in school, and many of the skills taught in our Houghton Mifflin Reading program is reinforced during Social Studies and Science instruction. Six reading skills that are practiced and applied throughout this series are: identifying the main ideas and supporting details, comparing and contrasting, cause and effect, sequencing, drawing conclusions, and summarizing.
